Dressmaking Course - 14 weeks

Service Description

This course is for total beginners to intermediate level seamstresses and seamsters. If you are a beginner, your first project will be either a lined tote bag with zipped pocket and boxed corners, or a pin cushion. This will develop your skill and confidence with a sewing machine and other essential sewing equipment. If you are an improver and feel that you have these basic skills, you can bring your current, dressmaking project with you, and I will assist you as needed. Each week, you will learn new skills including understanding sewing pattern information, choosing the best size for you, buying and choosing sewing patterns/fabric, and taking accurate body measurements. Once you have gained knowledge and confidence, you will make a garment of your choice using a commercial sewing pattern. I will guide you through your pattern and teach you to read and understand pattern envelopes, pattern markings, layout diagrams and commercial pattern instructions. No previous experience needed. Sewing machines and other basic equipment will be provided. Tuesday evenings, 6pm – 8.30pm Term dates: 8 September 2026 – 8 December 2026 14 weeks £280 5 January 2027 – 23 March 2026 12 weeks £240 13 April 2027 – 27 July 2027 17 weeks £340 The practical bits What you need to bring: All equipment and materials are provided for the initial project, but feel free to bring your own fabrics if you would prefer. When you are ready to move on to garments, you will need to bring your own pattern, fabric and notions. Drinks are available. Getting here: Kingston House is well located for both public transport and driving. It is a 5 minute drive from junction 1 of the M60 and there is a car park at the studios. It is less than a 10 minute walk from both Stockport train and bus stations. Accessibility: The studio is on the first floor of the building and the toilet is on the ground floor.
